When I was little my Dad would say "Nobody's perfect."....
"But you and I are as close as anyone can get."
Funny, but that smart "alec" (not the first word I typed here) attitude is part of what made me become me. I have a piece of that "Never let them see you sweat" and "show them who's number one even if you feel like crap"
Yesterday, Mom and I spent hours at the bank- organizing, closing, consolidating, etc... and then went to Dad's to meet with financial and administration. Funny, how I can write that in one sentence, yet it was a day full of stress and anxiety. and I do mean a whole day.
When we were done we could've laid down on the floor and slept, but we still had to go through the stress of seeing Dad.
We went back the A wing, whcih is the Altzheimer's wing or Locked wing and he wasn't in his room. we proceeded to the Chapel which they are using as an activity room during renovations. The room was filled. Deb the activities coordinator had them all in there playing a game with bean bags and they were getting ready for snack. All these old women and a few old men were sitting in chairs around the room. Dad was sitting up on the table, legs dangling. I ran over and and gave him a hug and said, "Dad, you look GREAT today" He said, "Of course I do!" I couldn't believe it. It was so him and then all these old ladies giggled! He was a star. Like he was meant to be. And one of the ladies said to me "He has to look nice to come hang out with all us ladies." What a Don Juan! Deb told us that he has been calling one of the ladies Evelyn. (my mom's name). Mom loved that idea. It was like she was there for him all the time. Deb said "Who's this Charles?" and pointed to mom. He said "Well that's Sweet Pea!"

A Christmas with Dad
I know a lot of people read this blog for funny things that the twins do. However, the real purpose of this blog is to act like a journal for me... a supplementary memory if you will.
This was our last traditional Christmas at home with my Dad. He has Alzheimer's. If you have read any of the Angel Shelf entries at the beginning of this blog you will remember some of the frustrations and yes, even funny stories at the beginning of his disease.
I remember the first major symptoms was a couple of summers ago. An avid farmer, Dad couldn't remember the word cucumber. This was a huge inconvenience for him because he always grew too many and so always asked everyone who visited, every time they visited if they needed any cucumbers. Hard to do when you can't remember the damned word. He was smart though. He wrote it down on a little notepad and kept it in his shirt pocket. He'd say "Hey, do you guys need any... uh..." pull the notepad out - look at it- "cucumbers?"
As the years go buy, it gets worse, the funny parts get fewer and fewer. On Christmas Day we told him to go help Matt burn trash. There's not much he can do but he gets bored. He told Matt, "If the fire gets out of control, call the Hubungis" hysterical.
Christmas Eve on our way to Red Lobster, he sang Silent Night with the radio. The best present I ever got.
The day after Christmas we had to put him in Mountain Laurel- a nursing home. They seem to really have their act together. I know this wasnt the most well written passage, but I just wanted to document it now. Maybe later in my free time (laugh here) I will edit it.

Hello, Officer? My Dad is eating my Combos...
Yes, that's right. Sammy's first 9-1-1 call. He yelled at Mike because he stole some of his combos (pretzel snacks). The little shit said "Daddy! I'm calling 911" Pretty soon the phone rings.
Did someone at this number have an emergency?
I'm growing old fast.

Sitting on a tuffet at Thanksgiving Dinner
We tried. Honestly we did. We couldn't paint the walls with crayons and marker all over them. We couldn't replace our beat up furniture with new. But we did clean our house and prepare an awesome feast.
We had nine (my side only) so we put the fold out table in the "play" room. It was in the Harry Potter closet. About an hour before eating, we put the plastic table cloth on that I had bought and the centerpiece that I had made.
As Sara and Mom arrived, things started hopping. I was doing last minute mashing etc, and was telling Sara and Matt to do some things like set the table, etc.
I heard Sara scream. That usually means a spider. she came out saying there was one on the table. How in the world can that be? I just took the table cloth out of the package! We had scrubbed the table earlier in the day. Ah ha! Maybe in the pinecones in the center piece.
Actually, I am getting ahead of myself. We did n't start brainstorming until she found the second spider. We removed the centerpiece.
She made Matthew bring the third one out so I wouldn't slug her. They were extremely tiny.
Needless to say, when she made Matt crawl under the table, there was a nest. Are you kidding me???? People had plates made and were sitting down! So we grinned and beared it and kept killing.
only me.

Strange Prayers
Maybe this shouldn't be written in a humorous form, but until we find an appropriate therapist.... anyway, ....
The other night Mike and I were in bed with Sammy in between. (Noah was in his bed)
We said our nighttime prayers. Each of us took a turn and the other two would repeat what was said.
"Dear God, thank You for our family".... "Dear God, thank You for our family"
"Thank You for Thanksgiving"....."Thank You for Thanksgiving"
"Dear God, please keep our family safe"...."Please keep our family safe"
"Dear God, please give me knives so I can cut into my Daddy's brain".......................?????

Samuel's Nativity
We always say Noah will be the pastor. What is it with me? When Matthew was little my mom and I also said HE would be a pastor. I highly doubt it now, however, Mike and I have always said Noah has that special magical touch from God.
so it was a little surprising to see Samuel so fascinated with the nativity set my mom bought at a yard sale a month or so ago. It was complete, but the pieces were from various sets, so she bought it and said let the kids play with it. They did. Baby Jesus slid down the roof of the stable. The kings rode across our kitchen on the donkey's back......
Matthew walked out into the kitchen one day and Sammy was sitting out there by himself at the table with the nativity. All the characters were lined up. When Sam saw Matt, he was startled and stuck up his opened hand and said, "Don't look at me. I am God"
Matt just quietly stood there as Sammy continued....
"This is the Body. This is the Blood. This is the Body. This is the Blood. None for you-you're an animal. This is the Body...."

Where have we been?????? aka Mike's Leg Story
This is a crazy time of year- normally- for our family, but this year was insane. School started in September and with that not only were Matt and I headed back to school, but also Mike back to IUP for his last semester of coursework before student teaching and the twins back to daycare. Crazy. 5 people getting up at 5 and out the door by 6:30- at least on days when Mike was subbing- which he wasn't doing a lot of because he is taking almost double a full time load of graduate work. That causes problems with paying daycare.... All kinds of changes in the admin at WB so I was crazy.
We were just establishing a routine when Mike got sick. He woke up very early on Saturday morning with one of the twins. When I finally ventured downstairs he all of a sudden said I don't feel good. I felt him. He had a fever. He took pills and went upstairs to bed. I couldn't believe it. One minute he was fine and the next he was throwing up in bed.
We checked on him frequently, pushing liquids the usual. By late afternoon I went upstairs and he barely could talk he was so sick but he said "look at my leg it really hurts". I pulled off his many blankets and his leg was red and swollen. I touched it lightly to see if it hurt and he screamed. I called my mom and she said maybe it was a bloodclot so I took him to the ER in Clearfield.
I really can't give you a blow by blow. Basically, we went to the ER every day for one or two IV antibiotics. It continued to get worse. It was celluitis they were saying. Then he developed blisters. It was the scariest thing. I wish I could include the pics for you. I have them if you know me and want to see them I can show you.
Wednesday they admitted him to the hospital. He was in for 10 days. I really thought he was going to lose his leg if not his life. We had to treat it like a severe burn because he lost all his skin.
In one way, I wish I had sat down and documented all the details, however, it encompasses our lives so entirely that it was impossible to even address it. My family was watching the twins when they weren't in daycare during the week. and Mike's family really pitched in and took the kids for two weekends. which they loved.
The final diagnosis was eryspelis which is the strep bacteria in his leg. Months later and he is still going to the wound clinic every other week and his leg is purplish, greyish brown and feels like leather from the knee to the ankle.
But I had to document it. We will never forget that experience, but in this catalog of our lives it had to be document. Besides, I have other great stories I want to share and didn't feel like I should until this was written. enjoy.
By the way, if you have stories of YOUR side of Mike's Leg Story, I would love to have them documented. Please hit the comment button and write your own stories of this period. I will continue to edit and update this story, but at least I got this much down.

Noah's Obsession
We met KokoChrispi We (my brother in law and affianced) at Altoona last night. We went to the campus and fed the ducks Apple Jacks, but they weren't too into them. Then we went to the boys' first Curve Game. (not Matt's first one) Noah had an "obsession" with holding his own ticket. A security guard walked up to him and said "Can I have your ticket?" He procedded to take Noah's ticket and then gave him an official eastern league ball that was a practice ball. Noah's Reply. give me back my ticket! :)
Deemed as Doomed?
Did you ever have a day that just seemed to be deemed by the stars as doomed? Wednesday the 20th was one for my husband and I. It started out great. We had decided to spend the day together so we arranged an extremely rare day alone by taking the twins to daycare. We were headed to Dubois for great food and shopping, but first I had to stop at work and address a serious sceduling flaw.
When I got to work, the problem had been analyzed by others, and basically was non-existent. yea! What a wonderful start to a great day...
Mike and I had a great time. We went home before picking up the kids and basically it fell apart from there. Long story short we found out our teenager has been smoking.
Later that night Sam wrapped himslef up in the bungy cord that held my china closet to the wall and pull it over. All my china broke and the cabinet landed on him. Mike, Matt, and I ran over to extract him, but he was still entwinned in the bungy! Unbelievable. Precious wedding presents and my Gramma's sugar bowl and creamer destroyed. Glass everywhere. Oh yeah, not a scratch on Sammy. Could that be the message in the clouds when we were at Pymatuning? We have a pic of The Word SAM clearly printed in the clouds. Anyway he has more lives than a cat and for that I am sooooooo thankful really. But what about my blood pressure??? Does anyone care?
Oh yeah, Sara came over to help clean up glass and while all the confusion and my tears and everything else was going on, Noah whipped it out and peed on the floor. Oh yeah.

Welcome Home Wesley
I am so proud. My nephew Wesley recently returned from Basic Training and his parents threw him a party at Nana's Riverlot. It was awesome. The food was spectacular. And we took a ride on the river. I will try to get a video or slide show up.
Finally- a Vacation
Well, we spent almost week in Pymatuning State Park. Our campsite was feet away from the beach. The only problem was that it was a little colder and rainier than we expected, so we had to find other things to do. Matt had football all week so he stayed home with my parents. We took my sister and neice, Sara and Kess.
We visited the deer park which is a lot of fun and we also spent a day in Erie which is my favorite place in the world. We visited Ye Olde Sweet Shoppe- for the best Choc Chip cookies in the world. It is on State and 4th Street. We went in the Tom Ridge Center. The kids loved that. What a great addition to the city that was. Kess lost her glasses somewhere and we still haven't found them. We swam in the lake and the twins absolutely loved the waves. so much fun. We took a boat tour and guess who got the wettest out of the 39 people on board? Yup. me. still- fun.
The kids rode Kess' scooter all week. Maybe a future present. they turn 4 soon.... Geez. School starts soon. My room is almost ready but my Lesson plans aren't. Getting nervous as with every year. Matt is a freshman this year.

Cute Quotes We'd Never Want to Forget....
Answer: I can't. There's a bagel in it.
My Request: Sammy! Quit picking your nose!
(btw, there was.)
Noah has been heard to say a lot lately: "I'm thirty with water." (or milk or juice....)

Camp
I belong to a family camp. 18 active memberships and several retired members. You must belong to the Laich/Nelson family to apply. Anyway, we are several generations into this thing and what has started happening is that camp is not being used as much. It's complicated, but the further spread out the family is getting the less socializing that goes on between us. Thus the poor building "LuckyRidge" sits empty.
At our reunion this year a few of my cousins and I decided to plan a weekend. we went out last weekend and honestly, it was one of the best times ever. Of course the twins were the twins. Noah went through 4 outfits on Friday and we didn't get there until after 5 sometime... They can't stay away from the spring. but neither could we when we were little.
We had great laughs and so much fun. Dave told us about some worm that gets in crickets and makes them kill themselves and then the worm comes out like 6 inches long. well we all laughed at drunk Vern and laughed and laughed. well Mike came home and googled cricket worm and it had a video. It is the grossest thing ever. We burnt furniture and felt like naughty children. We all swore not to tell anyone and then ran home and told everyone. Because it's fun. We saw lots of shooting stars. My cousin Amelia researched it and there were meteor showers. We went to the creek in the middle of the night and "paid homage to Aunt Nancy". We sang "there's a lonely little robin" on the way down and then did the Black Mo Shuffle to "I'll be done to get you in a taxi Honey..." I'm sure she loved it.
We resuscitated camp. (sorry for not being able to spell. I'll fix it later). I can't wait to do it again.
Going camping to Pymutuning this week from Friday to Wednedsay. I'm sure we'll have lots of stories. Campsite is right on the beach. Oh yeah, I know. smart. and we're taking a day trip to Erie. Monday probably. Erie is my favorite place in the world. Best chocolate chip cookies ever at the corner of 4th and state. really. tell them Betty sent you. They don't know me, but tell them anyway.
Oh, and before i forget, Matt had his first job working at the fair last week. He did really well and loved it. i was very very proud of him. Football started this week so he can't go camping with us. He loves that though. He'll get lots of fun time with Gram and Pap= who doesn't know us half the time, but loves matt.

VBS Hell
Don't ask me why, but with Mike's extremely busy graduate schedule, and me dealing with my wonderful preschoolers, we decided to volunteer to help out at VBS at our church. My sister Sara was in charge so that probably had something to do with it- not to mention I used to teach Sunday School and loved it and Mike needs as much teaching experience as possible for his resume.
Well all went well with that part, but what we didn't realize was - with Mike teaching and me in charge of snack time, the only people in charge of the twins were their teachers. This was a few weeks ago, but let's just say they were BAD. Mostly Sammers. Noah loved the music. We got a CD and still sing the songs repeatedly daily.
It was an awesome program called Power Lab. Lots of Science experiments. The fav was walking on water. It took 20 pounds of corn starch. It was very cool. If the kids walked quickly, they walked ON the water. If they faltered (like Peter in the story) then they sank. I tried it. Very neat.
Another experiment involved dry ice. neat. do you know that dry ice only loses 10% daily? and it is colder than regular ice? Why don't more people use more it when camping? I don't know. anyway, she blew bubbles with it.
Lesson learned? probably not. My kids love Jesus. Most people at the church love my kids... I guess I will live through this too.

Caramel Butt and Spaghetti Sauce
Oh Geez, I can't ever stop writing this stuff. The kids wouldn't believe how bad it was when they get older. The day was not meant to be a great one. I had an emotional breakdown this morning because my shower was cut short and I had to take Matt to his physical 2 and a half hours early! We won't even go into that. So on the way to Clearfield, I talk to my mom, calm down, and start feeling better. Mike says he will stay in the truck with the twins while Matt and I go in. I love this offer. I am so in need of a break. These kids are attached to me. Sleep with me. Heck they even come sit on my in the bathroom sometimes. Not a break. 24/7. I love my job. I am definitely meant to be a working mom... but I digress. Where was I? Oh yeah. So we finally drive around for awhile and we're only 45 minutes early so Mike drops us off and goes to a park with the twins. As I am walking up to the office, my butt feels funny. I touch it.
Now, let me go back a day. My twins are sick of fries. I love that. They want apples. with brown dip. Now if you are Mickey D junkies like we are unfortunately. I hate it anymore, you might not know that brown dip is caramel sauce. Matt screams at them yesterday, "No dip in the truck" Noah is flipping out and about to have one of his "episodes". Someday I will talk about that. I say "Matt just give it to him". The screaming goes on back and forth. Big dog - little dog. yip yip. yap yap. I'm driving.
I say "GIVE IT TO HIM"
"Fine, but I'm not cleaning it up"
"Fine, Matt, if he spills it, I will clean it up"
We get home. no spills yea!
Don't ask me how it got on the front seat of the truck. Oh yeah, you guessed it. I sat in it. and now I am walking into Matt's Dr.'s with a caramel butt. I ask him how bad it is. He just gives me a look. That tells me everything. It's bad. no hope. I try. For a scrap of dignity. I ask him if it looks like poop. I just get that I'm-sorry-to-tell-you-this look. Oh well.
All went well with his physical. Call Mike we are done. He says ok, Noah needs to use the restroom when we get there. By the time we checked out, Mike parked right in front of the door and had both twins in the restroom. They come out. Another pair of underwear hits the dust. We've just started throwing them away. I'm so sick of it. When will we be done with this potty thing????? I told Mike tonight that by the time the twins get rid of diapers completely, he'll be in them. Lord, give me strength.
Well, the day is shot. We can't go anywhere. Noah and I don't have pants on or that are presentable. so we go home. Pretty relaxing. I play with the kids and my husband makes spaghetti sauce. It was just about done, and he took the inner part out of the slow cooker and put it on the stove. It exploded. Spaghetti sauce everywhere. I cleaned it up. We went out. Not to the Outback like on TV, but to a local dive.
We counted over 30 bunnies on the way home and went to see miniature horses. That was fun.

Camping in Indiana, PA
Well, Mike had his second week-long course at IUP. It was with this crazy old dude named Thibadeau or something like that. I, once again, stayed at the wheel-in campground(click title of blog to go there) so I could spend some time with him each day rather than the 4 hours round trip daily. Last time we did this it was excruciating, but this time not too bad.
We had neighbors this time. Jen and her daughters Hailey and Kelsi. Christian people who were fun to be beside. Jen's husband Patrick popped in once in awhile from working. He makes homemade wine and gave us some. I loved it and Mike who isn't a wine drinker drank it also so he must have loved it.
We played in the creek, got rained on, ate in funny restaurants, and chased the twins all over when they ran away. Good week. Happy to be home though.

Busy Busy Busy..... CRASH!
What a busy time of the year for the Fry Family!!!! I love it. The only problem is that it makes the summer go soooooo fast. Teachers don't like that.
Friday we had to take my neice Kessie to the Osceola Parade. She was in the karate float. Well, we drop her off, find a close parking place and a spot to set up our chairs. yea! success. 20 minutes to go until the parade starts... ok we can do this....
"I have to go the bathroom"
Mike and I just look at each other... Where?! Mike walks Sammy to a tree that's close by but kinda of secluded. There are people everywhere waiting for the parade. He says, "Just pee here."
"It's not that kind of bathroom"
Funny. Well it ended up ok, because Matt and Mike took the twins for a looooooong walk trying to find a bathroom and when they returned the parade began.
friday night saw us visiting Scott and Ann - Siblings from Williamsport and going to Mom's for the PreReunion party. Great food. lot of fun. Kids swam.
Saturday morning has us not only gettting ready for our annual reunion, but packing because we are going camping on Sunday.... Sam opens the screen door by slamming his had THROUGH the glass in the bottom of the screen door. minor scratches only. Thank you God.
Actually, Thank you God for everything. I feel very blessed. Got to see many relatives and friends this weekend. Barb and Amanda were up. I miss them terribly. I will try to post a video soon.

Oh Man!
The twins were practicing praying this morning. I said, "you can pray to God or Jesus anytime you want. Just talk to him" So they were and Sammy was saying Amen at the end. I told him he was doing a good job so Noah folded his hands (all this was happening while they were dancing around the living room like jumping beans) and he said "Thank you for our house. Oh Man!"

I want to ride my Bicycle...
It's not only a cool song by Queen, it is what I've been hearing a lot of today. Mike got out their bikes. One inherited from Kess (Matt says it's his- whatever- it's a boy's bike) and one that was won at an Easter Egg Hunt at Winburne Park a few years ago.
I didn't realize they both had training wheels. Now I'm excited to get them going. It will give them something to do the next time we go to the Wheel-in camping for a week while Mike takes a week-long all day course.
I thought Sam would be a natural, but he isn't. He can't get the concept of pedaling. or steering. Noah at least pedals but doesn't have the gumption to waste that much energy.
We are going to Wport for the weekend to stay at the riverlot. Should be ok. Not great bathroom facilities, but I guess Ms camper here can rough it.
Scott and Ann can't come which is a bummer, but I hear they are going to Georgia to see Wesley graduate from Boot Camp. I am so proud of him and I know they are too.

Date:

Your Story:
Ah! I love your last entry! and I'm not a Scrooge. just competitive. I always win. Funny story. I dreamt NH contributor drove down to PA because she was mad at something you or Sara said. Anyway, She was going after the twins with a plastic fork and poked me in the hand! One prong broke off in my palm and there was blood everywhere. So I did a karate move on her and got plastic strip hand cuffs and put on her. like the use on COPS. Now what did THAT dream mean? I ate onions on my taco for supper. lots. maybe that was it. I woke up and Mike was awake. Said he had a nightmare too. Sammy drowned in a Channel. 1/2 hr later Sammy was in the bathroom sink. filled it. dunked his head. I said what are you doing?! He said swimming. I thought that was weird. PS: would love to see you over Christmas some year, but call first! lol:)

Noah outlasted me last night so I took him to bed with me. He kept struggling and moving and adjusting, saying sheep or something. He was trying to squeeze in between the comforter and sheet.... funny. I had to say "it's ok, Buddy. It's a BLANKET."

PS: would love to see you over Christmas some year, but call first! lol:)
